Abstract

This study aims to identify leadership initiatives for strengthening academic integrity and examine their contribution to institutional excellence in Islamic Senior High Schools in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This study employed a mixed-methods field research design at four Islamic Senior High Schools. The study analyzed quantitative data on academic integrity and institutional performance to examine their relationship and identify the relative effectiveness of leadership initiatives, while thematically analyzing qualitative data from interviews with school leaders and relevant stakeholders to explain the quantitative findings. The study identified six leadership initiatives: providing academic integrity training for all institutional components; improving human resource competence and self-management; responding consistently to academic integrity violations; reinforcing academic integrity as an institutional value; ensuring the implementation of academic integrity standards; and providing clear definitions and examples of academic integrity violations. Among these initiatives, academic integrity training for all institutional components demonstrated the strongest contribution. The findings also revealed a significant relationship between academic integrity and institutional performance. This study's novelty lies in integrating leadership initiatives, academic integrity, and measurable dimensions of institutional excellence within a mixed-methods framework. The findings suggest that systematic leadership interventions to strengthen academic integrity can contribute to sustainable institutional excellence in Islamic Senior High Schools.
